Academic Information for Visiting Students


Class Enrollment
•General visiting students include language students and subject-study students. Language students refer to visiting students attending Chinese language training courses at PKU School of Chinese as a Second Language. Subject-study students refer to visiting students attending undergraduate courses at PKU departments/schools.
•Visiting students must register at the International Students Division every semester within the designated date and select courses in accordance with the Regulations for Visiting Students Selecting Courses. 
Language students are arranged into suitable classes according to the results of their online self-assessment on Chinese proficiency prior to arrival and the face-to-face interview upon registration.
• Senior visiting students and research scholars do not take any courses. They conduct research regarding a specific subject with a supervisor from the accepting department/school.

Attendance and Excused Absences
• Attendance and participation are mandatory for all lectures, tests, and other academic activities. If you miss any academic activities, you must ask for an approval for excused absences in advance. Senior visiting students and research scholars need to have their absences approved by both their supervisor and the dean of their department/school. Subject-study students should ask for approval from the professor(s) of the course(s) for their absences. Language students should ask for approval from the School of Chinese as a Second Language for their absences.
• Visiting students who have accumulated over a month of excused absences within one semester will be considered withdrawn from the university. Absentees without approval will be warned or even dismissed from the university in accordance with related PKU rules and regulations.
• General visiting students who fail to attend over one-third of their classes are not eligible to receive a certificate of achievement.

Extension of Studying Period/Transfer to Another Department
• Students will be considered for an extension of study upon request. The request will be approved by the International Students Division based on the students’ previous academic records and attendance.
• After one semester's study, general visiting students who meet the requirement of having completed at least one year of undergraduate study at their own university may apply for a transfer to another department in the following semester. The request will be approved by the Internatioanl Students Division based on the student's previous academic records and attendance.
• The application for extension/transfer is usually in May and November. Students should pay the processing fee for their extension of study period.

Procedures before Leaving: Transcript and Certificate
• When finishing all the courses, students should come to the International Students Division with their student ID and apply for transcripts and certificate. Senior visiting students, research scholars and dropouts must complete required departure procedures before applying for a certificate/transcript.
• Students will receive a final official transcript and certificate upon completion of their studies. The first copy is for free. For more copies, the student should pay the necessary fees.
• During their studies, however, students will not receive any official certificate/transcript but may inquire about grades. If formal transcript/certificate are needed, they should pay for the copy/copies.


Regulations on Course Registration

Course Registration
• Language students should only take Chinese language courses at the School of Chinese as a Second Language and must take a language course load of 18 academic hours per week minimum.
• Subject-study students normally should only take undergraduate courses,and the course load should be no less than 6 credits and no more than 20 credits in total per semester. 
• Subject-study students should obey the principle of resource priority. Degree-seeking students of Peking University have priority in courses registration. Courses provided by special programs first meet the demands of their students.

• Chinese language training courses should be registered under the guidance of the teachers at the School of Chinese as a Second Language.
• Undergraduate courses are registered online under the guidance of the relevant instructions released by the PKU Office of Educational Administration.

Examinations and Grades
• Once the courses have been registered, they all appear on the final transcript.
• Students should follow the academic arrangements of the courses and take the required exam(s); otherwise, the relevant grade will not be obtained.
• The International Students Division is responsible for issuing official transcripts to visiting students.

Miscellaneous
• Language students are normally not permitted to take undergraduate courses. Exchange students at university level, however, while studying Chinese, may take English-taught undergraduate courses of no more than 6 credits each semester. Should another agreement exist, course selection will be executed in accordance with that agreement.
• Subject-study students may apply for taking one advanced elective Chinese language course only if there is space available. However, they should not take any core Chinese language courses, otherwise, they must pay the required tuition fee.

For instance, on the class schedule “1-2” refers to the 1 st and the 2 nd periods, therefore the class time is from 8:00-9:50 am.

3.  Regulations for Paying Tuition:
(1) Students studying for more than one semester but less than one full year must pay one full year’s tuition. Students staying for one semester or less must pay half of the full year’s tuition.
(2) International students should pay their tuition fees within the university’s designated period. New students should pay their tuition in full during registration.
(3) The deadline for paying tuition is the last day of student registration.
(4) If students have to pay the tuition later than the deadline, they must submit a written application to the International Students Division to get approval.
(5) Students would be considered as being in arrears without reason, under the condition of:
(a.) failure to pay the tuition within the designated period;
(b.) failure to pay the tuition in accordance with the standard;
(c.) failure to pay the tuition without a written application for special permission via the International Students Division;
(d.) the written application for special permission not being approved.
Students will be dismissed from the university if they are already one week in arrears without reason.

4. Regulations Regarding Refunds
(1) Students wishing to receive tuition refunds must provide their original receipt in order to receive any refund.
(2) Students who discontinue their studies within two months of the start of the semester will only be refunded 50% of that semester’s tuition. Students who discontinue their studies after two months into the semester will not receive any refund for that semester’s tuition. The start of the semester is the first day of the first week of the semester on the school calendar and the departure date is the day when all the school departure procedures are completed.
(3) Students who fail to register during the stipulated time but already paid the tuition fee through wire transfer may process the school departure procedures within 6 months of the start of the semester and receive refunds in accordance with the regulations. If the tuition is still not claimed after 6 months into the semester, it will all be turned over to the university.

NOTE: According to China’s financial policies, all refunds require an original receipt in order to be completed. Please save all receipts in order to avoid any unfavorable consequences!
