A brief introduction of our team
School of Economics of Peking University has a long history of organizing social practice activities. This year, several teams will apply for summer social practice. Our team plans to go to Dalian in Liaoning province. We are trying to figure out the current situation and protection of shadow play, a state-level non-material cultural heritage, by conducting in-depth interviews, and give our reasonable suggestions to its development.

Background
Shadow play originated from the Western Han dynasty, which is 2000 years from now. Relevant researches showed that all the types of Chinese drama derived from Shanxi Qin drama, which first originated from the shadow play. That’s to say, shadow play was the chief source of Chinese drama art.
Recently, though public media has enough attention to the shadow play, the protection of shadow play are confronted with dire challenges, as a result of the lack of cultural funds, the rapid expansion of modern media, and the lack of sorting and summary on its own inheritance process. Based on the background above, this activity tries to conduct in-depth research on shadow play and propose reasonable solution.

Feasibility analysis
This activity is highly supported by Dalian Government and Liaoning Normal University in Dalian will corporate with us to achieve our goal. In addition, we have already connected to the successor of shadow paly, who are willing to cooperate with our practice.
Schedule: We are going to arrive in Dalian on July 26th and conduct the social practice from July 27th to July 29th

Expected achievements
As the most important achievement, the practice report will include the current development of shadow play and research results about the number of people who enjoy shadow play, performance events and performing difficulties. In addition, we are going to forecast the future development of shadow play through the establishment of government intervention under market economic model.
What’s more, we are planning to record the practice in a micro film named “The Dream Shadow”, adopting documentary filming technique, hoping to show a vivid Liaoning.

2.Recruitment Information of Quanzhou Practice Group “A Journey of the Maritime Silk Roads”(北京大学赴福建泉州暑期调研团)

Introduction of Quanzhou

Located on the southeastern coast of China and enjoying a history of more than 1300 years, the city of Quanzhou used to be the most important Chinese port along the historic Maritime Silk Roads from the 11th century to 14thcentury. Known as Zayton by traders arriving from the Arab world, the port has welcomed sailors and travelers from many different cultures and religions. The four great travelers of the medieval West---Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Giovanni Marignolli, and Odoric---all wrote the openness and prosperity of Quanzhou. The North African traveler Ibn Battuta compared it to the Egyptian port of Alexandria, and Marco Polo described it as "one of the largest ports in the world."
Sailors, merchants and explorers came together in Quanzhou from the Maritime Silk Roads, and their continual presence in the city contributed to the development of peaceful coexistence between the many different ethnic and religious groups in the city, including Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, Nestorians, Manichaeans, Jews, Catholics and Muslims. This is illustrated by the diversity of historic religious sites and monuments in the city of Quanzhou. The Kaiyuan temple, with its twin pagoda towers, is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in China, whilst the Laojun statue, which is the biggest Chinese stone statue, illustrates the presence of Taoism. The Qingjing Mosque, furthermore, is China's oldest mosque, and stands as a witness to the long-lasting interaction between Quanzhou and the Arabian world. Additionally, the Can An (Thatched Hut) Manichaean temple hosts the only stone statue of the Manichaean prophet, Mani.

l  Purpose of Our Practice

The traditional Chinese civilization, usually represented inland, agricultural and conservative, actually has a another face---open, inclusive and export-oriented. Quanzhou, as the beginning point of the Maritime Silk Roads, serves as the best example for these characteristics.
We hope to explore the Chinese maritime civilization, discover the historical experiences buried in the rise and decline of this ancient port, and learn the exchange  of culture and trade in ancient times between China and other Eurasian countries through this social practice.
