2023 English Taught Master's Program in New Media at School of New Media, Peking University

About School of New Media

The School of New Media at Peking University was founded in February 2014. It is a teaching and research institution focused on the creative development of new media. Our school aims at promoting theoretical understanding, technological innovation and industry development in the field of new media. It also hopes to provide social services based on rigorous social research, teaching and advocacy. The School of New Media boasts some of the top teaching and research scholars in their fields. Our faculty comes from a variety of academic backgrounds including communications, information science, management, sociology, psychology and computer science. Program Overview

To meet the needs of a rapidly changing society and global economy, Peking University’s School of New Media offers an English taught master’s program in new media. The program aims at educating and developing young scholars and professionals in the new media field both in China and globally.

Program curriculum includes a variety of courses on theory, methods and critical issues in new media and online communication field. The program lasts 2 years and requires students to complete 30 credits for getting the degree.


Program Length

The program lasts two years for Bachelor Degree holders.


Tuition Fee (per year per person)

80,000 RMB


Program Requirements

1.       Non-Chinese citizens with a Bachelor Degree; For mainland Chinese students, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents who have immigrated to a foreign country and now apply for the program as international students, they shall hold valid foreign passports or nationality certificates before April 30, 2017, and have certificates of cancellation of Chinese nationality

2.       Applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate English language proficiency by providing TOEFL (iBT) scores of no less than 100 or IELTS scores of no less than 6.5.


How to Apply

Applicants should go through the international students’ online application process at http://www.studyatpku.com and submit the following materials to the program office.

1. Peking University Application Form for International Students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) with a photograph fixed. Please visit http://www.studyatpku.com, fill in the application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for reference.

2. A 1500-word personal statement (including a research plan), and resume or curriculum vitae.

3. Graduation certificate and degree diploma, which must be original documents or notarized copies either in Chinese or English.

4. Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved (must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English).

5. Two recommendation letters from your referees. The referees should be professor(s), associate professor(s) or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English. 6. One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary).

7. A copy of your TOEFL (iBT) or IELTS results: Students who do not speak English as the first language must have taken the TOEFL(iBT) or IELTS and met the requirement mentioned above, unless they have received a bachelor’s degree from an English-speaking university.


Application Fee

800 RMB, paid by Yinlian bank card or through online payment (please pay online according to the instructions of the online application system for international students). Any other currency or traveler’s check would not be accepted.

Please note that incomplete application materials or application without application fee will not be processed. All the application materials will NOT be returned. The application fee is NOT refundable.


Deadline for Application

The deadline for applications is February 21, 2023. All application materials should reach the international office before the deadline.

Please send the hard-copy materials to: Room 510, Mengminwei Building, School of New Media, Peking University, No.5 Yiheyuan Rd., Haidian District, Beijing,100871, P. R. China.

The envelope must be marked “Application for 2023 English-taught Master program in New Media”. All the application materials would not be returned.


Admission Evaluation

1. Initial screening. The admission committee of the School of New Media selects qualified students based on the applicant’s academic record, his/her research agenda, the strength of the recommendation letters, and other application materials that could be evidence of his/her intellectual ability.

2. Evaluative interview. Applications who passed the screening will receive an evaluative interview in March or April 2023. Based on the interview result, the admission committee makes its recommendations for admission to School of New Media. The Graduate School of Peking University reviews the results and makes a formal pre-admission decision. The International Student Division, Office of International Relations of PKU will issue the "Admission Notice" to the successful candidates before the end of June 2023.
