There are 4 specialties in the Department of Chinese language and literature: Chinese literature, Chinese linguistics, classical philology and applied linguistics (Chinese Information Processing), and our department also has Chinese language and literature for foreign undergraduate students. The Department of Chinese language and literature consists of seven doctoral programs: Literature and art, Ancient Chinese literature, Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Chinese Philology, Linguistics & applied linguistics and Classical philology; 11 master's degree with 24 professional direction, as well as a first class postdoctoral of Chinese language and literature. Now the department has a staff of 103 people, including 96 teachers, which consist of 53 professors, 38 associate professors, 1 associate and 4 lecturers.
For centuries, The Department of Chinese language and literature has trained 7285 full-time undergraduate students, 675 college students, 1701 graduates, 778 doctoral students, with a total of 10 439 people (including 939 coming from foreign and Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao). In addition, we have received 18 post-doctoral, 1773 foreign visiting scholars and teachers for advanced studies, 1870 domestic visiting scholars and teachers for advanced studies. Currently there are a total of 1084 enrolled students: 607 undergraduate students, 247 graduate students, 230 doctoral students (including 249 foreign and Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao students).
More than 90% of our graduates can continue their postgraduate study in pku (in or outside the department) and Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Nanjing University and other prestigious universities with exemption. Studying abroad is also one of the important options for the interested and aspiring students after graduation, and many students went to Harvard, the University of California, Princeton, Cornell, the University of Chicago and other world famous universities, where their knowledge , skills and spirit enjoy a good reputation, resulting in many foreign universities willing to accept the students of the Department of Chinese language and literature of Peking University. The employment rate of the department in recent years are between 98% to 100% , higher than the average level of PKU, and even higher than some application-oriented popular specialties. Students who want to work also have a greater range of choices: the national government agencies, research departments, news media, publishing houses, radio and television agencies, local universities, military, business and so on. Graduates of the Department of Chinese are generally recognized and welcomed by their employers for their "brand" reputation , as well as the solid foundation and overall quality. With China's accession to the WTO, talents of Chinese information processing, Chinese cultural studies and foreign language teaching are highly needed, so graduates of our department are popular in a lot of agencies and departments.
