Peking University School of Government was established on December 22, 2001, based on combination of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and the Program of Regional Economics within the Department of Urban and Environmental Studies.
School of Government is committed to student learning and the promotion of excellence in the profession, with the aim of establishing a world-class government school and relevant disciplines. It also intends to become a key base of government and public management, of training and educating talents with high quality, a consultative base for decision-making of the party and government, a first-rate base producing academic achievements, and an exchange platform for internal and external academic communities. The school focuses on discipline building and talents training, combining political science and economics, integrating academic research and practical applications, combining normative and positive research, academic training and professional training.
The college has 6 departments: Department of Political Science, Department of Public Administration, Department of Public Policy, Department of Public Economics, Department of Urban and Regional Management, and Department of Political Economy.
The department of Political Science boasts its rights of conferring doctor degree in the first-ranking discipline of political science in Peking University. Now it has PhD program of political science, including majors as political theories and methods, Chinese government and politics, comparative politics. Master programs include political theories, China and foreign political systems, history of CCP. Those majors of political theories recruiting students are political theories, Chinese political thoughts, and foreign political thoughts. Those of China and foreign political systems are Chinese government and politics and comparative politics; of history of CCP are party theories, CCP and contemporary Chinese politics. This department has 32 permanent teachers, including 8 professors, 17 associate professors. With close collaboration with Research Institute of Humanities and Social Science of the Ministry of Education, this department undertakes all related course offerings of PhD, graduate, undergraduate and MPA studies, and other various continuing education programs.
The department of Public Administration trains first-rate talents with basic knowledge of politics, economics, management and law, grasping modern managements methods of Chinese and foreign public administration. It offers courses for PhD candidates, graduate and undergraduate students, MPA, and students from continuing education. Collaborating with Center for Empirical Research of Public Management and Public Policy, this department undertakes various research projects of National Foundation of Social Science Planning, and keeps friendly contact with Chinese and foreign universities and colleges and academic research institutions.
The department presently has fields of studies including administration theories, contemporary Chinese government management, human resources, and public economics, with 10 professors and a complete training system of undergraduate, graduate and doctorate studies. Graduates mainly work in various ministries and committees of the Party and the State Council, large SOEs and key universities and colleges. Every year, the department has many students go abroad to exchange and study.
The department of public policy mainly undertakes teaching and research in basic theories and methods of public policy. It boasts faculties, with research background of social and natural sciences, who are familiar with front achievements in public policy, and undertake normative and positive research for long. In addition, it invites government officials and experts with rich experience outside the university to teach, so as to promote interaction between academic research and policy decisions. The department attaches importance to producing senior policy analyzing, consulting, and practicing talents for governmental and non-governmental organizations. The department is a chief undertaker of the public policy graduate program, and an important participant of the PhD program of public administration.
The department of Public Economics offers courses in public economics and public economic management, and in MPA program in Peking University. The department enjoys cross-discipline advantages, and mainly trains talents for governmental agencies, public enterprises, and other non-governmental public organization and public sectors.
The department of Urban and Regional Management engages in teaching and research in urban and regional planning and management, and has master, PhD and post-PhD programs in regional economics. It also offers courses for undergraduate, MPA, and other various continuing education students. Faculties in the department conduct important research projects in regional competitive advantage and strategy planning, and train talents of urban and regional planning, construction and management. The department is associated with Research Center for China's Regional Economy of Peking University and Research Center of Traveling Development and Planning of Peking University, and it also has an affiliated unit of the regional Science Association of China, and it has been a main supporter of Capital Development Institute jointly established by the Beijing Municipality and Peking University. The department maintains an extensive professional prospect.
The research and teaching focus of Department of Political Economy, Leo Koguan Institute for Business and Government and Leo Koguan Center for Strategic Studies is political economy, especially the relationship between government and market. The main topics of research and teaching include: international and comparative political economy, political-economic thoughts, business organizations, development and industrial policies and strategies, and strategic management. The Department has its own master program under the title of development management, and it also organizes a specific research direction for Ph.D. students, i.e. the direction of business and government. The current chair of the department is Associate Professor.
