About School of New Media
The School of New Media at Peking University was founded in February 2014. It is a teaching and research institution focused on the creative development of new media. The School aims at promoting theoretical understanding, technological innovation and industry development in the field of new media. It also hopes to provide social services based on rigorous social research, teaching and advocacy. The School of New Media boasts some of the top teaching and research scholars in their fields. Our faculty comes from a variety of academic backgrounds including communications, information science, management, sociology, psychology and computer science. Program Introduction
The English taught Ph.D. program in new media & online communication aims at educating and developing young scholars who are able to conduct highly qualified scientific research, to advance the quality of new media and online communication research in China and globally. The full-time program uses English language for courses, papers, and dissertations. Program curriculum includes a variety of courses on theory, methods and critical issues in new media and online communication field.
The program follows a strict annual-review system. Those who cannot pass the annual review may be disqualified from continuing the study the next year. Such students may be allowed to complete a Master’s degree instead.

The program lasts four years for Master-Degree holders.

Entry Requirements
1. Non-Chinese citizens with a Master Degree; For mainland Chinese students, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents who have immigrated to a foreign country and now apply the program as foreign students, they shall hold valid foreign passports or nationality certificates before November 30, 2013, and have certificates of cancellation of Chinese nationality;
2. Competitive applicants should have good UG and/or PG grades, strong references, and research experience, having a clear interest in pursuing academic career at a research-oriented university;
3. Applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate English language proficiency by providing TOEFL scores of no less than 100.
Application materials:
1. Peking University Application Form for International Students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) with a photograph fixed. Please visit http://www.studyatpku.com, fill in the application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for reference.
2. Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating expected graduation date), must be notarized documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
3. Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
4. A personal statement (3000 words for doctorate program in English).
5. Two recommendation letters from your referees. The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English.
6. A copy of your TOEFL results: Students who do not speak English as the first language must have taken the TOEFL with a score of over 100, unless they have received a bachelor’s degree from an English speaking university.
7. One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary).
8. Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field.
Deadline for Application
December 31, 2019. Please make sure mailed materials arrive before deadline. All application materials should reach the international office before the deadline. Please send the materials to International Students Division, Office of International Relations, New Sun Student Center, Peking University, Beijing, 100871, P. R. China. (The envelope must be marked “Application for 2020 English-taught Ph.D. Program in New Media Studies”). All the application materials would not be returned.
Admission Evaluation
1. Initial screening. After School of New Media got the applicants’ materials (those who have met the basic application requirements) from the International Student Office, the admission committee select qualified students based on the applicant’s academic record, his/her research agenda, the strength of the recommendation letters, and other application materials that could be evidence of his/her intellectual ability and commitment to an academic and research career.
2. Evaluative Interview. Applications who passed the screening will receive an evaluative interview in March 2020. Based on the interview result, the admission committee makes its recommendations for admission to School of New Media. The Graduate School of Peking University reviews the admission results and makes a formal admission decision. The International Students Division, Office of International Relations of PKU will issue the "Admission Notice" to the successful candidates before the end of June 2020.
