Application Notice for the Pre-University Program for International Students (Fall 2020 Entry)

Introduction

Peking University’s Pre-University Program for International Students (PUP) aims to make use of our school’s excellent educational resources to train a cohort of outstanding global scholars. It provides academically-outstanding high-school graduates, that wish to pursue an undergraduate degree at our school, with one to two years of preparatory training. The PUP pays equal attention to the accumulation of language-related knowledge and the training of language ability. It not only aims to improve all aspects of participants’ Chinese, but also places particular importance on the broadening of students’ general knowledge, academic horizons and ability to think and study independently, with a view to building a strong academic and linguistic foundation for future undergraduate study.

Upon completion of the PUP, international students that have performed well academically and obtained excellent results will be recommended for priority entry when applying for future undergraduate study at Peking University.

 

Application Criteria

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens;

2. Before entry (September 2020), applicants must be between 17 and 23 years of age.

3. Applicants must have a full-time high school diploma.

* This does not include diplomas from either ordinary Chinese high schools or Chinese high schools’ international/distance-learning programs.

4. Applicants should, theoretically, have completed their entire primary and secondary education abroad.
* If applicants have previously studied in China, then this should be clearly stated in your application and the relevant grade transcripts should be attached.

5. Applicants with Chinese heritage (at least one parent with previous or current Chinese nationality) should have obtained a foreign passport before 1st September 2016 and have either proof of renouncement of their former nationality or a foreign birth certificate. By time of entry, these applicants should be 18 years of age.

 

Curriculum

Chinese Language Classes (20hours/week): These are compulsory classes, which vary each term. Classes often include Intensive Reading, Spoken Chinese, Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking and Academic Chinese.

Mathematics Classes (4 hours/week): These are elective classes, which will be set according to the student’s plan of study. Classes often comprise of Basic Mathematics and Advanced Mathematics.

Lectures on Chinese Culture (2 hours/week): These are elective classes.

 

Study Plan and Undergraduate Majors

Chinese language classes are compulsory throughout the PUP and classes will be arranged according to a placement test. Mathematics classes will be divided into two levels: Elementary and Advanced. Students’ plan of study will be devised according to their current level of Chinese, mathematics and their potential undergraduate major.   

 

How to Apply

1. Applications will be accepted from 2nd March to 30th May 2020.

2. Applicants should log onto the PKU International Student Online Application System (http://www.studyatpku.com), complete the application form, submit it and then print a hardcopy for reference.

3. Applicants should then submit the following paper application materials to the International Students Division, via EMS express mail:

i.One application form, signed and with passport photo attached. The application form can be printed after submitting application online.
ii.One high-school diploma, certificate of graduation or proof of imminent graduation (original). If the documents are neither in Chinese nor in English, then an official, notarized translation should be attached and verified by an official party, such as a government agency or a diplomatic mission.

iii.One high-school grade transcript (original). If the grade transcript is neither in Chinese nor in English, then an official, notarized translation should be attached and verified by an official party, such as a government agency or a diplomatic mission.

iv.One personal statement in Chinese or English. Please click here personal statement for a template.

v.Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a teacher or class tutor at the applicant’s high school. There are no specific requirements on the job title of the second referee.

vi.One photocopy of your passport. The passport must have an expiration date beyond July 2021.

vii.One application fee of 400 CNY. (This may be paid in cash at the International Students Division finance office or paid online at time of application. Unpaid applications will not be processed. The application fee is non-refundable, regardless of application result.)
viii.Applicants that have previously received primary or secondary education in China should state this clearly in their application and submit one photocopy of the corresponding grade transcript.

ix. Optional materials:

  - Photocopy of grade transcripts for SAT, IB, A-Levels, ACT or any other similar examinations. 
  - Photocopy of grade transcripts for any college entrance examination taken in the applicant’s home country.

  - Photocopy of other certificates or awards

  - Photocopy of HSK results or any other proof of Chinese language                            proficiency.

  - Photocopy of any other materials applicants believe may help their application.

* Documents should be sent to:  Room 328, New Sun Student Center, Peking University, Haidian District, Beijing, China

* The hardcopy of application materials will only be accepted via China Post (EMS) mail, not via on-site submission.

* After reviewing the above materials, Peking University reserves the right to ask for other related materials and to arrange interviews with applicants.

 

Tuition Fee: 36,000 CNY/Year.

 

Admission Notice

Once approved, applicants will receive an electronic notification of admission via email in May or June. Paper admission notices will be sent out before 30th July.

 

Accommodation

Twin Room at Peking University’s Zhongguanyuan Global Village

Address: No.126 Zhongguancun North Street, Haidian District, Beijing (Exit C, Metro Line 4: East Gate of Peking University Station).

Room Rent: About 80 CNY/per person/per day.

* Dormitory accommodation will be reserved on behalf of our students. PUP students do not need to apply for accommodation themselves.

 

Medical Insurance

According to the regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education, all international students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students will be required to purchase Ping’an Insurance Company’s Foreign Student Insurance Plan on-site on enrollment day. Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.

 

Visa Information

Students admitted to PKU may apply for their visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their country with their letter of admission and the JW201/202 form. International students who wish to study in China for over 6 months will be required to obtain an ‘X1’ Visa. Students must come to the International Students Division and change their X1 visa into a Residence Permit within 30 days of entry into China.
