Introduction
Chinese Language Studies Program is open to international students who love Chinese Language and Chinese culture. Students learn Chinese at the PKU School of Chinese as a Second Language as full-time general visiting students.
Instruction is divided into elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Class size is approximately fifteen students per class. Normally class hours are from Monday to Friday, four academic hours per day, twenty hours per week. Besides Chinese language studies in the classroom, Peking University also offers program students a series of activities to experience Chinese culture and get a deeper understanding of China.
Upon completion of the program students will receive a program certificate and an official transcript. The program is normally one semester long, but students could apply for extending their study period to at most four semesters in accumulation.
Application Prerequisites
· Non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport
· Above the age of 18 and under the age of 45
· In good physical and mental health
· Having completed at least one year of undergraduate study at your own university.
Chinese Proficiency Requirement
No Chinese proficiency requirement.
Application Process
Step 1. Online Registration
Register your details at http://www.studyatpku.com. Please choose “Non-degree program”—“General Visiting Students Program”—“GVS3”, fill in the application form, choose “School of Chinese as a Second Language” when filling in the study plan online, submit and download the application form in PDF format.
Step 2. Submit Hardcopies of the Application Materials
Please send the hardcopies of the following documents to the PKU International Students Division by postage/express.
(1) Peking University Application Form. Print the downloaded form out, sign and attach a passport-style photograph.
(2) Certification of highest degree attained or Certificate of Enrollment at University(original documents or certified copies, either in Chinese or English).
(3) Letter of Motivation/Study Plan, 500-1000 words, in Chinese/English.
(4) Two recommendation letters from your school/company (original documents, either in Chinese or English).
(5) One photocopy of your valid passport ID page (passport type must be ordinary).
Note: Your application documents will not be returned.
Application Fee
400 RMB, paid in the following ways:
(1) in cash;
(2) by Yinlian bank card on spot;
(3) through online payment.
Note: Any other currency or travel check would not be accepted.
The application fee is not refundable.
Applications with incomplete hardcopies of materials or without application fee will not be considered.
When to Apply
Fall Semester Admission: Online application starts on March 1st every year.
Spring Semester Admission: Online application starts on November 1st every year.
Note: Applications are on a “rolling” (first come, first served) basis – until full capacity. Only when the office receives the hardcopies of all the required documents will the application be processed.
Admission
Admission will be determined according to your educational background and the academic achievement. Upon acceptance, the University will send you the ‘Admission Notification’ as well as the ‘Visa Application for Study in China (Form JW202)’ at the end of the semester.
Registration Period
Fall Semester: In early September (specified in the Admission Notification);
Spring Semester: In February (specified in the Admission Notification).
PKU Academic Year
Fall Semester: normally from September to January;
Spring Semester: normally from February to June.
Tuition Fee (per person)
18,000 RMB/semester.
Teaching Materials Fee
150-300 RMB/semester
Medical Insurance
The Ministry of Education of China requires that all international students be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Peking University international students are required to purchase the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students on the day of registration.
Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.

Accommodation and Catering
There are different types of housing facilities for international students on PKU campus, and applications are open online at www.studyatpku.com. Dormitories are not guaranteed. For more information about the application time, please pay close attention to the PKU International Students Division’s website (www.isd.pku.edu.cn).
Self-funded students may find their own living accommodation off campus. Below is some information for reference:

Please NOTE that students who live off campus must register to the local police station within 24 hours.
Students will receive a Peking University campus card (ID card) upon registration and may use the card in on-campus dining halls, PKU Library and other facilities.
Visa Information
Students admitted to PKU may apply for the visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country with your Admission Notification and JW202 form. International students who study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain ‘X1’ Visa, which is only valid for 30 days upon your arrival in China. You must come to the International Students Division and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China. Students who study at PKU for less than 6 months should apply for ‘X2’ visa.
