2020 Application Information for International Students(Master's Degree and Ph.D. Degree)

Programs Introduction:

Master's Program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 2-3 years, fulfill the designated credits, complete the master's thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the Master's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.

Doctorate Program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Students with bachelor’s degree pursuing PhD degree in subjects of sciences or continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies, their study period at Peking University is normally 5 years. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.

Application Prerequisites:

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport,  Residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to Peking University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before November 30, 2013, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

Applicants for Master's program must have attained a bachelor's degree and students who graduated from non-Chinese universities must hold a bachelor's degree from a university accredited by the Ministry of Education of China. (Grade skipping or joining in the middle of the course is not acceptable Applicants for doctoral programs must have attained a master's degree, and students who graduated from a non-Chinese institution must have a master's degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China. Students with bachelor’s degree could apply for PhD program in subjects of sciences or continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies.

Note:

(1) The application procedures for some English taught programs and double degree programs may differ accordingly, please refer to the program brief.

(2) Applicants can apply for a maximum of two programs. The application materials and fees are not refundable and there will only be one admission result. In order to avoid the possibility of a clash in the interview timing(s) of two different programs, please carefully consider while applying for a second program.

Application Materials:

1. Peking University Application Form for International Students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) with a photograph fixed. Please visit http://www.studyatpku.com, fill in the application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for reference.

2. Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating expected graduation date), must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.

3. Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.

4. A personal statement (1500 words for master program, 3000 words for doctorate program, must be in Chinese.)Please click here to download the template.

5. Two recommendation letters from your referees. The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English. Please click here to download the template.

6. A copy of your HSK results:

Candidates for Subjects of Sciences: HSK level 6, 200 overall (min. 65 in writing) is required;

Candidates for Subjects of Humanities: HSK level 6, 210 overall (min. 65 in writing) is required;

7. One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary).

8. Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field.

9. Other materials required by the specific school or department you apply to.

Note: Two copies of all application materials are required, one original and one duplicate. (Note: Each application is independent, each person can apply for up to two programs and each application should be submitted separately in hardcopy with the required application materials) Please hand in personally or sent them by post to International Students Division of Peking University (The envelope must be marked ‘Application for Graduate Admission’).

Application Fee: 800 RMB, paid in cash, by Yinlian bank card or through online payment. Any other currency or travel check would not be accepted.  If you apply for two programs, you need to pay for both application fees at the same time, a total of 1600 RMB.

Please note that incomplete application materials or application without application fee will not be processed. All the application materials would not be returned. The application fee is not refundable.

Applicants whose mother tongue is not English are required to submit TOEFL iBT (100 points or above) or GRE ( 315 points or above) scores or other certificate to prove their English language proficiency. For specific requirements, please refer to the application information of the respective English-taught program. Please note some departments may require applicants to submit a certificate or evidence of Chinese language proficiency. Kindly submit the materials as required in the application information.

Medical Insurance

All international students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to purchase the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students on the day of registration. Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.

There are different types of housing facilities for international students at PKU.

Self-funded Students are required to find their own living accommodation. Please note that students who live off campus must register to the local police station within 24 hours.

Visa Information

Students admitted to PKU may apply for your visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country with your letter of admission and JW201/202 form. International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain ‘X1’ Visa, which will only be valid for 30 days after your arrival in China. You must come to the International Students Division and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China.
